He wrote it for his own students — kids who had already decided reading wasn’t for them — deliberately stripping out the dense description that loses reluctant readers and keeping the story moving. He tested it in his own classroom; they finished it, then asked what happens next. Born in San Francisco and now living in Florida with his three boys, he is at work on a second book: a coming-of-age story about kids who build a backyard wrestling federation.
